Paul Saurini produces one of the most visually overstimulating live shows around, and in Quantum Recall Episode 15 he confesses that what he actually craves is silence. He covers the noise wearing him down: Google Fiber crews tearing up the neighborhood, leaf blowers, vacuums, kitchen timers, loud cars, and other people’s obnoxious ringtones. Then Google Fiber left a dangerous hole in his lawn and moved on, and the call to fix it went about how you’d expect.

He also crushes $1,100 worth of grapes with family to make homemade wine, survives a weekend of carbs, takes a firm stand against peeing in public pools, and asks whether Siri’s new unlock-first rule is about security or about keeping us glued to our phones. Paul is clear that Quantum Recall isn’t a hobby. It’s a TV show he produces, and it’s a passion and an obsession.

In the AI segment, “Pauly Wally” admits he woke at 3:30am and built his own WAV-to-MP3 app with Claude. Video commentary covers Julia McCoy on AI hacking fears, Jamie Kennedy on The Matrix and AI, and how AI regulation could lock out up-and-coming competitors.

  • Pool etiquette: a firm stand against peeing in public pools
  • Siri’s unlock-first rule: real security, or another way to keep us glued to our phones?
  • The 3:30am AI app: “Pauly Wally” builds his own WAV-to-MP3 app with Claude before sunrise
  • AI commentary: Julia McCoy on AI hacking fears, Jamie Kennedy on The Matrix, and how AI regulation could shut out smaller competitors

From the Pre-Show to the Main Show

The night before, on the Quantum Recall Pre-Show, Paul admitted he had been vibe coding nonstop and running on very little sleep. Quantum Recall Episode 15 picks up that thread with the early-morning app he built, then pivots to why, after a week of nonstop screens and noise, what he really wants is a little peace and quiet.

Episode Timeline

In Quantum Recall Episode 15, Paul Saurini admits the irony of running one of the loudest-looking shows on the internet while craving silence. From there he takes on a Google Fiber hole in his lawn and Siri’s new unlock-first rule, then explains the 3:30 a.m. AI app he built with Claude. The second half is all AI: agent hacking fears, a Jamie Kennedy rant about the end of the world, and a skeptical look at the numbers behind the AI boom.

What we talked about

6:01 · A monk who owns a strobe light. Leaf blowers, vacuums, loud cars, obnoxious ringtones and his mom’s kitchen timers (“more timers than NASA”) all grate on Paul’s sensitive hearing. He wears earplugs to play pinball and often drives with nothing playing so he can pray in the quiet.

9:00 · Grapes on Saturday, carbs on Sunday. A family wine day at his cousin’s house, now with an automated destemmer, was a welcome break from AI, until the donuts caught up with him. “The wine is aged in barrels and I was aged by bread and donuts.”

11:00 · The 3:30 a.m. AI app. Awake before dawn, Paul built a working WAV-to-MP3 converter with Claude in two hours, then expanded it to handle every common audio format. “Normal people wake up at 3:30 to pee. I wake up at 3:30 to ship software.” That success led him to start a far more ambitious project: a recording app that also captures video of each performance.

15:02 · Feeling his age. Chasing a 10x workflow has a cost. After nights of short sleep, Paul notices forgotten words and slower thinking, and he gets serious about rest: nothing fixes the brain like good sleep.

18:00 · The Google Fiber hole. Crews left a foot-sized hole in his front lawn next to the sidewalk, and two days after he called, it still wasn’t filled. “Google knows everything I’ve ever searched and they still can’t find the hole in my lawn.”

21:00 · Siri, from butler to bouncer. For years Paul asked Siri from across the room to read his messages. A recent update now demands he unlock his phone first, even to turn on the TV. His request, “as one vibe coder to another software company”: make it a setting.

24:00 · This is not a hobby. Paul pushes back on anyone who calls Quantum Recall a hobby. He produces a TV show, it’s his creative legacy, and real artists have never needed a paycheck to be the genuine article.

42:01 · AI agents, hacking and the fear narrative. Paul reacts to a video from the AI clone of Julia McCoy about open-source agent tools reportedly used to break into government networks. It hits home because he runs one of those frameworks, Hermes, as a local model on a Mac mini and finds it jumps ahead without permission. His take: the misuse is real, but fear stories also pave the way for regulation that would lock regular people out of local AI.

1:06:00 · Jamie Kennedy on AI’s endgame. Paul, who met the comedian at Fan Expo this summer, plays his warnings about runaway superintelligence and riffs on Ray Kurzweil’s singularity, the movie Transcendence and reality as information. His view: AI still needs humans today, but robotics could change that.

1:17:01 · The AI money question. A news segment on an AI lab’s IPO filing, with billions in losses and enormous planned cloud spending, prompts Paul to compare it to the telecom overbuild, when failed companies were bought up for pennies on the dollar and taxpayers carried the cost.
